This curriculum is popularly known as the New Curriculum. &nbsp;The pioneers of the New Curriculum at O Level sat their final national examinations in 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The students who started with the New Curriculum in 2021 have now joined A Level starting Senior 5 in 2025. This however caused a number of questions from the education stakeholders in Uganda with many asking whether the students who have been doing the O Level New Curriculum will again revert to the Old curriculum at A Level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This perhaps could have caused the ministry of education in Uganda under the National Curriculum Development Center to introduce the New&nbsp;A Level curriculum in Uganda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>In a world where education systems constantly evolve, Uganda is not an exception. The proposed review of the Advanced Level (A-Level) curriculum is a significant step towards aligning the country\u2019s educational framework with global trends and national needs, particularly in light of Vision 2040 and other key development agendas. The A-Level curriculum is more than just an academic syllabus; it\u2019s a crucial tool for economic and social development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Suggested Changes to the A-Level Curriculum<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The New&nbsp;A Level curriculum in Uganda has introduced Changes like transitioning from an objective-based curriculum to a Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), adopting learner-centered teaching approaches, integrating ICT in all subjects, emphasizing practical skills, and introducing school-based assessments accounting for 20% of the final grade. The curriculum will also see the introduction of vocational subjects and contemporary studies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Proposed Subjects at A-Level<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The curriculum will offer a diverse range of subjects, including;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Humanities<\/strong> (like CRE, IRE, Geography),<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Sciences<\/strong> (such as Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry),<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Vocational subjects<\/strong> (including ICT, Art and Design, Entrepreneurship), and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Languages<\/strong> (local and foreign languages, including Kiswahili and Ugandan Sign Languages).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Needs Assessment Study for A\u2019 Level<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2021\/22, a thorough needs assessment was conducted by the National Curriculum Development Centre (NCDC). This study revealed critical gaps: the current curriculum\u2019s failure to equip students with practical skills for the job market, its misalignment with international curriculum trends, and the lack of inclusion of vital contemporary issues like digital literacy and climate change. Rooted in the 1963 Castle Education Commission, the existing curriculum is also criticized for being content-heavy, outdated, and exclusive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Purpose of the A\u2019 Level Curriculum Review<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The&nbsp;A Level curriculum in Uganda review aims to bridge these gaps, optimizing the learning experience and achieving Uganda\u2019s educational goals. Objectives include aligning the A-level curriculum with the National Lower Secondary Curriculum, integrating essential skills, values, and attitudes, updating teaching methodologies, and introducing school-based assessments. A significant focus is also on vocationalising secondary education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The Philosophy of &nbsp;the New&nbsp;A Level curriculum in Uganda<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The reform to the New&nbsp;A Level curriculum in Uganda is driven by the philosophy to create a well-rounded, patriotic, and morally upright citizen. This individual will be a critical thinker, inventive, enterprising, and an inquirer who can make informed judgments and offer innovative solutions to challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Proposed A\u2019 Level Learner Profile<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The envisioned A-Level learner will be knowledgeable, an effective communicator, a leader, a team player, and technologically savvy. It also necessitates careful consideration of subject combinations to meet the desired learner profile. With the first batch of students under the new curriculum expected in Senior 3 by 2023, there is a pressing need for efficient planning and implementation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The NCDC seeks collaborative support from vice-chancellors, academic registrars, and key stakeholders in discussing and making recommendations for this proposed review.
